Girls Tennis claims 15th victory of the season - 10/3/2020
Saturday, Oct. 3, 2020
at Blanchester High School
Blanchester 3, Middletown 2
Records: Blanchester 15-2 (I believe that's the all-time best record for a season - it's certainly the best in my coaching tenure - 2009 team was 14-2 overall); Middletown 3-13
Singles:
1: Maddy Coyle (B) d. Hannah Wilson 6-4, 7-5
2: Grace Irwin (B) d. Katie Pearson 6-4, 6-2
3: Annie Trovillo (B) d. Molly Murphy 6-0, 6-0
Doubles:
1: Paige Patterson, Lindsay Isenberg (M) d. Taylor Bradley, Abbey Irwin 6-2, 5-7, 6-4
2: Ashlynn Tran, Leslie Reyes (M) d. Ashleigh Osborn, Leah Boegeman 6-2, 6-4
Notes: Final regular season records:
Maddy Coyle 18-4, all at first singles
Grace Irwin 21-1, all at second singles
Annie Trovillo 19-3, all at third singles
I've had some great singles players, but never three players that won at least 18 matches in a season. They're all back next year too. I can't wait.
Comments: First off, a huge thanks to Middletown. They finished two consolation matches at the GMC tourney this morning and then drove to Blanchester for a dual match. That speaks to the dedication of their coach and their players.
Always cool to coach against a former player, and Seth has done a great job with that program. They play in a brutally tough league, and they had their season delayed a couple more weeks than the rest of us, so it has been a very condensed schedule.
This was a great tuneup for sectionals. Wilson really hit the ball well at first. It took an outstanding match from Maddy to walk away with the win. I think it was her best win of the season. Pearson at two had one of the best serves we've seen this year, but Grace was able to fight it off and pick up a nice win. Annie had yet another great match at three. We were missing Rianna at first doubles, but I thought Taylor and Abbey battled well against a very good first doubles team. Leah and Ashleigh played well at second doubles too.
I'm so proud of this group and everything they've accomplished. I hope we can use Monday as an opportunity to play against very good players and learn from them. It should be a great springboard into our offseason plans.
Upcoming: Monday - Sectional at Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, 9 a.m.

Girls Tennis Wraps up unbeaten SBAAC season with win at Bethel-Tate - 9/29/2020
Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2020
At Bethel-Tate Middle School
Blanchester 5, Bethel-Tate 0
Records: Blanchester 14-2, 8-0 SBC National. Bethel-Tate 1-10-1 overall, 1-6-1 SBC National
Singles
1: Maddy Coyle d. Abby Bingamon 6-0, 6-1
2: Grace Irwin d. Makayla Yarger 6-0, 6-2
3: Annie Trovillo d. Amberlee Gladwell 6-0, 6-0
Doubles
1: Taylor Bradley, Rianna Mueller d. Dylan Crabtree, Emma Wetzel 6-1, 6-1
2: Abbey Irwin, Leah Boegeman won by forfeit
Comments - This officially wraps up the league title. I think the two courts we lost in league play (2nd doubles against CNE during the regular season) is the fewest we've lost during a league title season. I think the people that tell my girls that they only win because it's so easy don't see the work they put in. They don't have to apologize to anyone for their success. I'm proud of how hard they work, and I'm excited to see how we finish the season as we start building to what should be a phenomenal 2021.

Notes: This clinches Blanchester's 13th SBC National Division championship. We have won 9 of the last 10 and 11 of the last 13 league titles. This is the first time a National Division team swept all five brackets.
Blan records this season:
Maddy Coyle 15-2
Grace Irwin 16-1
Annie Trovillo 16-1
Taylor Bradley, Rianna Mueller 13-1
Comments: First off, I'm glad we've gotten to this point in the season to be able to compete for a league title. It's been a crazy year, and I think as late as July we wondered whether we'd get to this point or not. So I'm very grateful.
I think my brother summed it up best. This was a very satisfying day. This was the culmination of a lot of hard work by all 11 of our girls and our coaching staff to get to this point. It is always a great feeling to win a league championship. To finish it off the way we did today says a lot for these kids. Our goal at the outset of the season was to sweep our league matches and sweep all five courts at the league tournament.
Maddy and Grace were very much in control. Maddy likely clinched player of the year on her 16th birthday. Annie got tight in the latter stages of that match, but she blasted through the last three games to pull out the win. I'm so happy for all three of those girls for all the work they put in.
First doubles was very business-like. They have really become a very good first doubles team for us. I'm so glad they were able to finish it off.
The question has been if we could beat CNE at second doubles. I had tried two different pairings in league matches and we lost both. We went with Abbey and Maggie and they played brilliantly. They stormed through their four sets to clinch all league honors.
We've still got a few things out there to wrap up before this season comes to an end. This was a pretty sweet day, no doubt.

2: Lilly Braden, Zoe Moore (C) d. Abbey Irwin, Leah Boegeman 3-6, 6-2, 6-3
Comments: I was sure CNE would be very motivated with us coming to town. They played very well. We did what we had to do to get the job done, and that was the most important thing.
Maddy lost the first three games and won the next 12. She was dominant after the sluggish start. Grace played very well from start to finish. Annie was a little tight, but her opponent played a very smart match. Annie hasn't really had many tough matches, so I was proud of the way she handled this one.
First doubles started off a little slow, but I thought they really played well from the end of the second set on. Second doubles was a good battle that could have gone either way.
This means we'll be in first place heading into the league tournament. So we just need to take care of business Monday.

2: Brooklyn Miller, Shyla Burson (W) d. Ashleigh Osborn, Lily Collins 6-0, 6-2
Comments: It seems strange to have senior night so early in the season, but that's the way things go in this strange year. I'm so proud of Taylor, Ashleigh and Lily for all the hard work they've put in. Taylor has been the anchor of our first doubles for two years, and she's really playing well right now. Ashleigh and Lily had a tough opponent on this night, but they have worked so hard to make themselves and their teammates better throughout the season and their careers. All three of them should be proud of the work they've put in and the legacy they'll leave behind.

Doubles:
1: Taylor Bradley, Rianna Mueller d. Grace Goddard, Emma Pinson 6-2, 6-1
2: Abbey Irwin, Leah Boegeman d. Alicen Temple, Sierra Bailey 7-6(2), 6-1
Notes:
Maddy is now 9-2, Grace and Annie are 10-1. Taylor and Rianna are 7-1. For the team that's seven straight wins after the loss to Madeira on Aug. 11. Abbey Irwin returned to the lineup after missing seven matches with a shoulder injury.
Comments:
Little Miami had a solid squad. I thought this was an excellent win all the way down the lineup. Maddy's opponent didn't miss. She was super steady. Maddy had to work for everything she got. It took her 2 1/2 hours, but she was finally able to pull away at the end.
Grace and Annie both did a nice job. First doubles played very well again. It was great having Abbey back in the lineup. She worked hard over the summer and was solidly in the lineup when she got hurt. She is going to be a big boost to our doubles lineup. She and Leah played very well together.

2: Rebecca Holbrook, Calandra Farrell (N) d. Ashleigh Osborn, Maggie Caldwell 6-2, 6-3
Comments: This was a solid win against a New Richmond team that is much better than their record indicates. Two of their losses are to Wilmington and Anderson, and those are two outstanding teams. Dragoo is a very good player at first. I thought Maddy played her tough. Maddy made her hit good shots to win, and that's what she was able to do.
I thought Grace and Annie both gutted out solid wins against senior opponents at 2 and 3. Those were quality wins. I've been impressed with how first doubles has progressed. I thought they played their best match of the season.

Comments: I knew Western Brown was going to have a solid singles lineup so I thought this would be a solid test. Maddy lost to the same girl 6-3,6-3 last year. It shows just how much she had improved. Grace played a very solid match. Annie took no prisoners. That girl played 1 singles last year against us, and Annie hit her off the court. Impressive win.

2: Grace Irwin (B) d. Liz Young 6-3, 6-1
3: Annie Trovillo (B) d. Brooklyn Miller 6-1, 6-0
Doubles:
1: Taylor Bradley, Rianna Mueller (B) d. Shelby Kuttler, Cassidy Luttrell 6-2, 7-5
2: Haylee Steele, Liv Cunningham (W) d. Leah Boegeman, Gracie Kaehler 6-2, 1-6, 6-1

Blanchester 5, East Clinton 0
Records: Blanchester 5-2, 3-0 SBC-National; East Clinton 0-1, 0-1
Singles:
1: Maddy Coyle d. Holly Bernard 6-0, 6-0
2: Grace Irwin d. Myah Anteck 6-0, 6-0
3: Annie Trovillo d. Katelynn Carey 6-0, 6-0
Doubles:
1: Taylor Bradley, Rianna Mueller d. Emmy Chambliss, Natilee Anderson 6-0, 6-0
2: Gracie Kaehler, Leah Boegeman won by forfeit
Notes: All three singles players are now 6-1 overall and 3-0 in SBC play.
Comments: East Clinton had four girls playing their first varsity match and a couple of them were only in their second day of tennis. I thought, for their limited experience, they did very well against more experienced players. They tried to be aggressive when they had the opportunity and got better as the matches progressed. Coach Stehlin always does a great job with that program and that's a team that will get better as they get more experience. Hopefully if some EC high school female athletes are reading this, and they're looking for a sport this fall, it's not too late to jump on the tennis bandwagon. It's a great sport that's a lot of fun.

Comments: This was a strong way for us to finish the first round of league play. Maddy and Grace both played very well and took care of business quickly. First doubles continues to improve with each outing. They were very solid. It was a solid win for second doubles as well.
After eight matches in the first 13 days of the season, now we have three matches over the next 17 days. This is a chance for us to keep improving and work on getting healthy heading into the final stretch of the season.

Note: The match started after a 2 hour 30 minute rain delay
Comments: First off, a huge thanks to athletic director Brad Ballinger, the CNE coaching staff, my brother, my non-starting players and Chris Bradley, among others, who helped me with the roll-drying of the tennis courts. I wasn't sure they were ever going to dry, but thanks to the efforts of all of those people, we got to play.
There isn't much more I can say about our singles players that I haven't already said. They have worked extremely hard. They are very good. They are getting better with each match as their experience grows. I'm extremely proud of them.
I was also proud of our first doubles playing a very solid match. They are starting to build chemistry and play better with each match.

2: Rianna Mueller, Maggie Caldwell (Bl) d. Emma Brock, Makaila Burnham 7-6 (6), 6-1
Comments: I'm pleased to get a split against two quality tennis programs. We had our chances to pull out the match against Taylor. They just came up with the big points in those two match tiebreaks. Batavia was a little shorthanded, but that's still a solid win for us. That was a big-time win for Maddy Coyle over Elise Neal at first singles. Neal is a very good player. Maddy is off to an excellent start at first singles. She's playing aggressively and confidently and it shows in the results.
Obviously, the injury to Abbey put a damper on the end of the day. Hopefully her absence will be a short-term one. We've got some depth at doubles and now someone else will get an opportunity to show what they can do.Thursday, August 13, 2020

Notes: 1st singles was 2 1/2 hours
Comments: It was an excellent day for our singles players. After two tough matches yesterday, Maddy had another tough opponent in Madeira's number one. It was an excellent match with both players grinding it out with the team match hanging in the balance. I'm proud of the way Maddy battled against a good player. It really could have gone either way.
Grace and Annie dominated their matches. Both of them played their best matches of the season. All three of our singles players look to be in top form heading into league play.

Comments: It was a good start to league play. Maddy was playing her fourth match in four days. She played an excellent first set, and finished the match strong with five straight games.
Thought it was a strong effort from first doubles. With Abbey getting hurt, it changed the pairing there. It feels like Taylor and Rianna are getting more comfortable together. They played well.
