Blanchester 5, Bethel-Tate 0
Records: Blanchester 10-6 overall, 7-1 in SBC National Division; Bethel-Tate 4-11, 1-7
Singles:
1: Taylor Bradley won by forfeit
2: Grace Irwin won by forfeit
3: Carolyn Bockhorst won by forfeit
Doubles:
1: Kayla Allen, Annie Trovillo d. Grace White, Abbie Wheeler 6-3, 0-6, 6-3
2: Saliya Geary, Maddy Coyle d. Abby Bingamon, Amberlee Gladwell 6-2, 6-2
Comments: With everything decided and Bethel only having four players, they decided to let their two seniors play doubles, so we played Kayla and Annie together. Kayla has meant so much to this program for the last four years. I named her a captain at the end of her sophomore season, because I knew she was going to be a leader for this program. The way she has carried herself on and off the court has been amazing. We'll miss her as a player, but more as a person.
Saliya was a big addition this year, and she helped us get some big wins at second doubles. Jill Hudson had a tough year work-wise, but had a big win for us at East Clinton. We are grateful for both of them and will miss them. -Coach Sexton

Second doubles was up 5-2. Then went down 6-7, love-40. Saved four match points in the game total. Then went up 8-7, 40-love. Had four match points in the game total. Went to tiebreak. Went down 1-5, rallied to 5-5, then lost 5-7.
Comments: Overall it was an excellent weekend for our team. We had a first place finish and three second place finishes playing against three Division I schools. In the end, we needed one more win to win the tournament. We lost three of the five matches against Ross, so they were deserving winners.
It's easy to look at the second doubles match as having decided things since it was the last match, but we had opportunities throughout the weekend to find that one more win. Nobody should feel like any one loss was the difference. I'm proud of second doubles and the way they battled.
Maddy had an excellent weekend, and capped it with a dominant performance on her birthday. Kayla and our first doubles both played opponents with an experience advantage. This was especially true at first doubles, as they played a pair of seniors that have played together for three years. They played very smart tennis.
Overall, our girls got to experience tournament pressure, which should only help them with the league tournament up next. -Coach Sexton

Comments: First off, it was great to have Kayla back. She had a tough opponent to start with, but it's great to have her back.
Honestly, it was a tough day for a lot of these kids for reasons that had nothing to do with tennis. Hopefully this was a chance to take their minds off things for a couple hours.

Comments: Any time you can win without your best player, you have to be pleased. Still, when I heard he was putting his two best players at first doubles while moving his first doubles to second, I was a little concerned. That was a great win for our first doubles against those two. They found a way to pull it off. Jill has had a tough time this season with her work schedule, and then I put her in a tough spot at third. She did a nice job settling down to get the win.
I'm happy for Maddy and Annie, who probably weren't on court for more than 30 minutes and finished within two minutes of each other.
We'll keep working hard and hopefully we'll get Kayla back next week and we'll be ready to hit the homestretch. -Coach Sexton

2: Mia Torres, Carolyn Bockhorst d. Maggie Hammond, Faith Pitts 5-7, 7-6(8) [10-4]
Comments: I think we got exactly what we wanted out of this match. I'm happy for Annie and Grace to move up a spot and win. It was Grace's first varsity singles win. I'm happy for her. I'm also happy for Mia and Carolyn, as they got their first varsity wins. They joined us in the second week of practice and they've been working hard. They're a big part of a very bright future for our program. -Coach Sexton

2: Saliya Geary, Maggie Caldwell d. Angie Cox, Abby Silvers 6-1, 5-7, [10-2]
Comments: Any time you can beat the team that won it last year, it's a good win. We have a few things to clean up still, but overall I'm really pleased we were able to get the clean sweep.
Maddy Coyle was dominant. She didn't mess around. It was her best match of the season. Kayla got off to a slow start but cruised after the first set. Annie was up 5-2 in the second, but credit their girl for coming back and forcing the match tiebreak. Annie was down 7-4 in the tiebreak before rallying for the 10-8 win. I'm proud of the toughness Annie showed pulling that out when she wasn't playing her most confident tennis.
First doubles had a very solid win. The first and third sets were outstanding tennis from them. Second doubles would have won in straight sets if not for a scoring error, but they overcame that and dominated the match tiebreak.
Overall it was a good win, but there are a lot of league matches left and we have to see them again next week. I'm sure they'll be ready for us back at our place. -Coach Sexton

1: Lili Volk, Hayley Wolfe d. Grace Irwin, Taylor Bradley 5-7, 6-1, 7-5
2: Candace Scott, Skylar Bazarthall d. Ashleigh Osborn, Maggie Caldwell 7-5, 6-2
Comments: Top to bottom, that was our best effort of the season. I know the score might not reflect that, but Monroe has a very solid team. Their first singles is the best we've seen this year. She's legit. I thought Kayla played a very good match against her.
There were great bounce-back efforts from Maddy and first doubles tonight. Both spots seemed to struggle on Monday at Western Brown, but all three of them played very well against Monroe. First doubles played more than three hours, and Maddy played about 2 1/2 in a straight-sets match. It was a great effort by all.
It was a great match to play before getting into divisional play. Hopefully we can take that same effort into tomorrow. -Coach Sexton

1: Taylor Bradley, Grace Irwin (B) d. Maggie Paul, Brooke Schoma 4-6, 6-4, 6-1
2: Erin Day, Peyton Wells (T) d. Jill Richardson, Ashleigh Osborn 6-1, 6-1
Comments: Well that was a wild match. We didn't get started until about 5:15 due to Taylor arriving late. Coyle was up 5-0 in the second set, Swope tied it up at 5 and then Maddy won the next two games to close out the set. It was the deciding match, which normally we would play out, but since they had already played for three hours and Taylor had a long drive home, we decided to play a match tiebreak. Those are basically a coin toss. That was the margin between the two teams in this match.
Annie really battled through some heat illness in the match. She somehow found a second wind in the third set to rally from a break down, but Gerth just got everything back. She probably got five or six balls back that had no business coming back. Great efforts from both Maddy and Annie.
Kayla did a nice job taking care of business again at first singles. Impressed again with first doubles. Once they settled down and kept the ball on the court, they really took control of the match.
I was hoping for a win on my 40th birthday as a great present, but I'll gladly take a great effort against a very solid team. - Coach Sexton

I'm really pleased with how we started the season. There were a lot of nerves but I thought we battled through them well. Kayla and Maddy played exceptionally well. Annie was very tight to start but finally relaxed and finished strong. I was very pleased that first doubles bounced back from a tough middle set. They can be very good when they play under control. -Coach Sexton
