5/20/19 - Baseball District Semi Finals @ Urban Youth Academy vs. Roger Bacon
Lost district semi final game 11-8
Record: 14-11 (8-4)
We put up a really good fight. I’m not convinced the better team won today. We gave them way to many free bases and made costly errors at the wrong time. We were winning 8-5 in the fifth. A point in the game where strikes and defense would have won. It’s always tough ending a season like that.
Congratulations to all three of our seniors who had brilliant careers. Dustin Howard (4 year starter), Hayden Tedrick, and Clayton Boyd provided outstanding leadership to this young team. I wish them the best as they move forward onto the next stages of their lives. -Coach Lawson

Record: 13-10 (8-4)
That was one of the most exciting games I have been apart of. We got out of back to back bases loaded situations in the 6th and 7th. It started with pitching. Adam Frump our starter gave us beyond a quality start. He was able to locate his pitches and keep the hitters off balance. The biggest out of the game went to Dustin Howard. He was able to close the game out with the bases loaded in the 7th with a deep flyout to left. Off the bat I was immediately thinking how can we make a play at the plate. Adam Frump in left field turned and sprinted and caught the last out of the game on the warning track. If he doesn’t catch that ball we lose by one.
We did not have many hits. We were able to draw some walks and move up on aggressive base running in the dirt and sac bunts. Then cash in at third with outs less than two outs.
Overall, I am very happy with how the guys played. It is very satisfying with everything this team has been through this year we have a change to go back to districts and have a chance at a district title. -Coach Lawson

A great well fought win tonight. Especially being able to bounce back after yesterday’s loss. I love the kids showed heart coming back after losing our two run lead and going down 4-2.
Brody pitched a very nice game. He was able to elevate the ball getting a lot of pop ups. This is only his third start of the year. He is getting stronger and sharper with each outing. Trenton Czaika did a nice job in relief. He pounded the zone and challenged the hitters.
The last inning was very exciting. Regan Burch hit a one out single. Stole second and third on back to back pitches. Trenton Czaika plated the game winning run on a sac fly to center. This was our first walk off win this year. It’s always exciting to do it that way.

This was a nice team win. A lot of players contributed offensively. We did have back to back errors in the fourth with two outs that led to three unearned runs. That allowed them to tie the game. I am happy how we responded by not hanging our heads.
Brody gave us five strong innings in his second start of the year. He kept his pose and the ball off the barrel. Dustin Howard got the win. He pitched two scoreless innings. I have all the confidence in the world with Dustin. I know exactly what we are going to get with him. Strikes. -Coach Lawson

We got out to a quick start with a leadoff double by Nick Musselman. Who then scored 3 pitches later on a hard hit ground ball by Justin Myers that led to a throwing error. Unfortunately we we're not able to get anything going after this. Again, we faced a solid arm on the mound that we knew had the ability to get us off balance with a curveball. I felt like we were prepared for it and were able to battle some, but still struggled making solid contact tonight. It was another tough one to take, but we are continuing to constantly learn from each game and trying to continue making progress with our overall knowledge of the game. -Coach Freeman

Entirely to many strikeouts and pop outs. We need to make better adjustments at the plate. Make them field and throw it across the diamond. Good things will happen in high school baseball if you make teams do that.
Adam Frump did a great job keeping them at bay. It was 3-1 heading into the sixth before we made a couple costly errors. He was leaving the ball up a little and was throwing to good of 0-2, 1-2 pitches. He is only a freshman so he is still learning. Chalk it up as another quality start for him against a very good team. Hillsboro had a solid group and played a really good game from all aspects. They are definitely coached well. They jumped out early with hard hit balls and aggressive base running. Again our starting pitcher, Wesley Moore, threw a lot of strikes and forced them to put the ball in play.
Their pitcher worked very efficiently throughout the entire game and put together an impressive one hit performance. Often times we take too many good pitches early in the count. Tonight we attacked the first pitch, but it didn't work in our favor. We struggled to make solid contact. -Coach Freeman

Parts of the game were closer than the final score. I was happy with the fact that our guys continued to battle throughout the game, refusing to lay down and quit. Errors really hurt us tonight and many of them came on routine plays, which allowed them to extend innings and plays leading to more runs. I was impressed with Peyton West's effort on the mound. He pitched to contact which is what we ask our pitchers to do. James Compton, Justin Myers, and Clayton Boyd all had solid days at the plate, all three had multiple hits, including doubles. With the score tied in the bottom of the sixth Brody Rice lead the inning off with a line drive go solo homerun to left field. What is more impressive is he hit one down the line in the same at bat for strike one but it was called foul.
Hitting is contagious. Sometimes that’s all you need is someone to get a big hit to wake the bats up. We continued to hit the ball that inning tacking 2 more insurance runs on the board. That pitcher had a good two seam fast ball that road righties in. We was getting a lot of ground balls that way.
Hats off to Dustin Howard for giving us all he had on the mound. He got out of his own jams and made pitches when he had to with runners on base. Just a gutsy performance.

Trenton Czaika had his second complete game this week. He was able to capture the win in game 1. He looked just as sharp as he did Monday. We were unsure how he would come out with four days rest. He had command of both pitches and pounded the zone. The second game we started Dustin Howard but had to pull him in the middle of the fourth due to pitch count. He kept his composure and was focused on executing his next pitch. Infield did a much better job of making plays behind him. We still didn’t play a full game. Every time we extended our lead we let them right back in it with an error or mental mistake. I do believe we grew tonight as a team. It was a nice, hard fought league win. Hopefully we can get this thing rolling in the right direction. -Coach Lawson

Trenton Czaika pitched a very nice game. He needed an outing like this for his confidence. He went 6 innings only issuing 1 walk. Our defense let us down tonight. We had 5 errors that led to 8 unearned runs. We can’t stop beating ourselves.
New Richmond pitched their ace and we hit him well. We stranded 11 runners. We couldn’t get that big 2 out hit. -Coach Lawson

New Richmond overpowered us in almost every facet of the game. They hit the ball well and were patient hitters. Unfortunately we continue to give teams too many free bases and tonight they made us pay when they had runners on base. We were able to manufacture a run in the 1st inning without a hit which is something that we work on with our players. We were unable to get any more production going forward, with only two more baserunners in the next 4 innings. I believe we can be much more competitive than we were tonight and must come together with a complete team effort the rest of the week.

We continue to shoot ourselves in the foot allowing our opponents to have a big inning. Having 5 walks and 2 errors in the first inning isn’t going to get it done. It sets the tone for the game and puts us immediately behind the 8 ball. If our pitching is struggling we need our defense to step up and make plays.
On a brighter note, freshman Regan Burch relieved and showed us some good things only giving up 4 runs. He is a lefty which is nice and has good movement with his fastball. We need to work on his secondary pitches and I think he will be able to help us out sooner rather than later. -Coach Lawson

Looking at the score you’d never think we were in total control the entire game and winning 6-4 going into the seventh. We had another breakdown where we could not throw a strike and we had to burn through four pitchers to get three outs allowing them to score 10 runs. It really is a shame we have given the last two games away like we have playing as well as we have. I have seen a lot of good things take place. We need to keep our focus and stay sharp for all 21 outs. We cannot assume the other team is going to rollover and give us the win.
Dustin Howard pitcher a very nice game. He made them earn everything run they got. He kept it around the plate and was able to change speeds. He had them off balance and guessing. - Coach Lawson

We played an unofficial game that finished 10-10. We wanted to still approach the game as competitively as possible and get better with the reps we would be getting. Wesley Moore started the game on the mound and did a great job throwing strikes and working very efficiently. Nate Coyle and Justin Gray finished the game pitching. Offensively we put together 6 runs in the 4th inning and 4 in the 5th. We drew quite a few walks, were aggressive on the base paths, and produced a couple of productive outs. We are constantly working to improve our situational awareness and ability to execute plays. I felt like tonight served as a good learning experience in those areas. -Coach Freeman

We aren’t going to beat anyone with 20 walks. Our pitchers need to quit giving hitters so much credit. There top 5 were 4-14. Even the better hitters will get themselves out. The Blanchester JV baseball team fell to 1-3 on the season. We gave CNE way too many free bases. We stress pitching to contact to our team, but tonight we were simply unable to do it until later in the game. Our team has struggled thus far to stay in games early, so it takes a lot of mental toughness to continue believing that we can compete after a tough inning. I believe this is something that is difficult to teach. Hopefully we can find a way to limit the early mistakes moving forward. At the plate we were unable to change our approach after falling behind in the count. -Coach Freeman

Freshman Adam Frump got his first varsity win tonight. He went 5 strong innings giving us a quality start. He was able to work from in front and throw his curveball in any count. He has a real bright future ahead of him.
Cole Ficke ignited the offense with his first career homerun. It’s not all that often you get a catcher that can hit too. He does a fine job behind the plate for us.
It was nice to get a couple wins the last couple days. I feel we are getting better each time we take the field. Replacing last years seniors has been tough. Our real test will be Monday against CNE. They have all starters back. It will be a good measuring stick for us. -Coach Lawson

We put together a good effort tonight and we were able to play nearly error free baseball. We made the plays that we expect to make and were able to feed off of a great effort on the mound by Justin Myers. The most impressive part of the outing came in the bottom of the 4th inning, where Myers worked his way into a bases loaded jam with no outs and then was able to strike out 3 straight batters only allowing 1 run. Myers ended up throwing 5 innings, allowing 2 runs along with 7 strikeouts. Wesley Moore finished the game by striking out the side in the bottom of the 6th.

Goshen put a lot of balls in play, but unfortunately we had many errors that allowed them to continue pulling away. At the plate we took too many good pitches, leading us to get in many pitcher's counts which we couldn't overcome.
