5/9/18 - Softball @ East Clinton Sectional Tournament
Lost 2-0
After Monday’s slug fest, tonight’s game was about pitching and defense. Both pitchers threw extremely well and both defenses made some outstanding plays. We threatened in the 6th when we had bases loaded and no one out, but I have to give their pitcher and defense credit. The fielded back to back ground balls and each time got the force out at home. We hit the ball hard most of the night, but it was always right to someone and they made the defensive plays they needed to make.
It was the last game for our 7 seniors- Maddie Curless, who ended her career as the all-time innings pitched leader in Blanchester softball history with 485 1/3 innings, Jay Dalton, Katy Henry, Hannah Mann, Makenzie Phillips, Shelbie Rose, and Lilly Tedrick. These girls have dedicated and committed themselves to our softball program for the last four years and I am grateful for all they did to help make our program better. They are an outstanding group of young ladies and they will greatly missed next season. -Coach Grogg

5/7/18 - Varsity Softball HOME vs. Greenview 1st round Sectional Tournament
Won 12-10
This game was just a good old fashioned slug fest and we found a way to get the win. Kassidy Abney (2 hits including a 2 run homer in the in the 4th), Jay Dalton (2 doubles), and Shelbie Rose (2 hits, including a double, and 4 RBI), to lead the offense. Defensively, we made the routine plays when we needed to. When a team is hitting as well as Greeneview was tonight, you got to get outs when you have a chance. Hannah Mann had a solid game at 2nd base tonight. Maddie didn’t have her best stuff tonight, but she really battle through some tough situations and came up with some big pitches when we needed them, especially in the last 3 innings when she held them to only 4 hits and 2 runs. Greeneview had the tying runs on base with only 1 out in the 7th and Maddie got back to back ground balls to end the game. -Coach Grogg

Another game where errors cost us, when you play a team that puts as many balls in play as East Clinton does, you have got to make plays when you have a chance. I have got to give them credit for putting a lot pressure on us defensively. I was once again pleased with the effort, as we battled and gave ourselves a chance to be in the ball game. Kassidy Abney and Morgan Oberle had 2 hits each to lead us offensively. -Coach Grogg

We really battled tonight. I was so pleased with our effort. We just couldn’t put together anything offensively at the plate. Wagers was just too much for us to overcome tonight. I was happy with our patience though, as we drew 7 walks. Maddie pitched one of her better games of the season, holding a very good offensive team to only 6 hits and 1 earned run. -Coach Grogg

This game came down to timely hitting and defense. We just never came up with the big hit we needed until the 7th. I was pleased with how we battled back in the 7th and gave ourselves a chance to tie the game. After scoring 3 runs, we had the tying run on 3rd with 2 out and we just weren’t able to get her in. Defensively, we just made a few mistakes at the wrong times and they capitalized on them and scored 2 unearned in the 4th.

4/28/18 - Varsity Softball HOME vs. Little Miami
Senior day double header
Congratulations Madison Curless for becoming the ALL TIME leading innings pitched person for our Ladycats.
Game 1 - Lost 10-0
Game 2 - Lost 5-0
In both games today it just came down to not getting hits at the right time. In game 1, we hit the ball hard, but it was always right to someone. We had several chances to score, but Little Miami made the plays they needed to. And, it was pretty much the same thing in game 2. I was pleased overall by our effort, even though we made some defensive mistakes in game 2 that we haven’t made in several games. Before game 1, we took the time to honor our seniors- Maddie Curless, Jay Dalton, Katy Henry, Hannah Mann, Makenzie Phillips, Shelbie Rose, and Lilly Tedrick. They have been an outstanding group of young ladies to coach and I am thankful for all they have done the last four years to help make this program better. We have 4 regular season games left and then hopefully we can put together a nice run in the tournament and extend their high school softball careers a little longer. Also, Maddie Curless pitched 7 total innings on Saturday and that puts her at 444 1/3 innings pitched for her career which makes her the all-time innings pitched leader in Blanchester softball history. -Coach Grogg

Won 14-0 in 5 innings
Record: 7-6 (7-2)
Maybe the most complete game we have played all year. Everyone in the line-up either had a hit or reached base. As a team we had 6 doubles tonight. Patton and Curless had 3 hits each and Dalton, Abney and Phillips had 2 hits each. Defensively we only committed one error. But, Maddie’s performance on the mound tonight was near perfect. Despite the final score, I was not disappointed in our effort. We did not play a bad, East Clinton just played better and hit the ball really well tonight. It was nice to get back on the field after having our last two games rained out. This was our most complete team win this season. Everyone on the team contributed to tonight’s win, whether it was on defense, at the plate or running the bases. Maddie pitched 7 strong innings to pick up her 5th win of the season. Over the last four innings, only 4 runners reached base, 2 in the 4th, 2 in the 5th and none in the 6th and 7th. Jay Dalton led the offense going 3-3 and scoring a run and Shelbie Rose was 2-3, with a homer and 2 RBI. Defensively, we played one of our better games. This was another one of those non-league games that I love to have on the schedule. Massie is just a solid team all the way around with outstanding pitchers. I give them credit for the way the battled at the plate, putting a lot of balls in play and forcing us to make plays and get outs. Maddie Curless really battled on the mound and pitched out of several jams. But, when it came down to it, we just had a few errors at the wrong times, which cost us some runs. Record: 4-3 (4-1)
Even though we didn’t have many hits tonight, we got them at the right time. Morgan Oberle had a double in the 4th to drive in Hannah Mann to give us a 1 run lead and Kassidy Abney’s solo homerun in the top of the 5th added an insurance run. Abney also had a sac-fly RBI in the 3rd. On the mound, Maddie scattered 4 hits over 7 innings to get the win. This was her 4th start this week and she really battled tonight, pitching out of several jams, especially in the 5th and 6th when Georgetown had the tying run on second each inning. Even though we did not play the cleanest game defensively, we made big play when we needed them, including Savanna Shank’s game ending catch near the fence in centerfield. - Coach Grogg

Won 8-5
Record: 3-3 (3-1)
I was really pleased with our overall effort tonight. Even when we fell behind twice, we battled back each time to either tie or take the lead. The big inning tonight was the sixth. After Felicity scored three in the top half of the inning to take a 1 run lead, we responded with 4 runs to go up 8-5, and then held Felicity scoreless in the 7th to get the win. Probably the most impressive thing about our 6th inning was that we scored all 4 runs with 2 outs. Kassidy Abney drove in Elecia Patton to tie the game, Maddie Curless drove in Jay Dalton to give us the lead, and Shelbie Rose’s 2 RBI single gave us a 3 run lead heading into the 7th. This was the kind of non-league games you like to play early in the season. I knew we were going to face an overall solid team with one of the better pitchers in the American Division. Wilmington did a nice job at the plate, putting a lot of balls in play and pressuring us defensively all game. With the limited amount of time we have been outside, I was pleased with our defensive effort. We still have some things to clean up and improve upon defensively, but we made positive steps in the right direction tonight. Offensively, I was glad to see us make some nice in game adjustments at the plate, something we did not do Monday night. This three hour game was a slug fest for both teams. The Ladycats were down by
twelve runs when their bats came alive in the bottom of the fifth. They rallied that half
inning to score seventeen runs and gained the lead. The Ladycats combined for 21
hits. All the way through the order everybody showed up ready to swing the bat.
Hannah Renner had three hits and two RBI’s while Annanisa Conley had three hits and
three RBI’s. The Ladycats outfield, Annanisa Conley, Bethany Shanks, and Alexa Sams,
also had several great plays backing their pitcher Destiny Waldron. -Coach Shank

Despite the outcome, I was pleased with how we battled in the cold weather. It can be difficult to play in those conditions and we handled it well. We just made too many defensive mistakes at inopportune times which cost us runs. Maddie had another strong performance on the mound, going the distance, giving up only 6 hits with 5 strikeouts. Final Score- New Richmond: 18 Blanchester: 12
This game had a couple early lead changes when New Richmond busted the bats out in
the fourth to pull ahead. Both teams battled the cold and wind, but New Richmond’s
solid defense ended up being the difference maker. The Ladycats defense struggled
early and never really found it’s groove through 7 innings. Abbi Lindsey made the
start on the mound and struck out four. Chloe Stewart and Hannah Renner had two
hits a piece and each picked up two RBI’s. -Coach Shank
Loss 7-4
Record: 2-1 (2-0)
Despite the outcome, I was pleased with how we battled in the cold weather. It can be difficult to play in those conditions and we handled it well. We just made too many defensive mistakes at inopportune times which cost us runs. Maddie had another strong performance on the mound, going the distance, giving up only 6 hits with 5 strikeouts. Offensively, we had our chances, but were only able to string together several hits in the 4th inning when we scored all our runs. -Coach Grogg

Win 10-9 in 9 innings
Record: 2-0 (2-0)
This game was just a good old fashioned slug fest and we found a way to win. I was very pleased with how we responded several different times during the game. We were up 6-1 heading to the bottom of the 5th and Bethel scored 6 runs to take the lead. We then came back in the top of the 6th and scored 3 run to regain the lead. Bethel then scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th to tie the game at 9-9. Neither team scored in the 8th. In the 9th, Hannah Mann was hit by a pitch to start the inning, she then stole second, Morgan Oberle singled to left, advancing Mann to third, after Savannah Shank reached on an error by the catcher, Mann scored on Noelani Tangonan’s sac fly to left. Bethel had the tying run on 3rd with two outs in the bottom of the 9th, but the batter grounded out to Maddie Curless to end the game. At the plate, we got production from everyone in the lineup and Maddie was real warrior on the mound tonight, pitching all 9 innings to pick up her second win of the season. - Coach Grogg

4/7/18 - JV Softball HOME vs. Bethel Tate
Final Score- Blanchester:20 Bethel:16
The Ladycats fought at the plate and on defense all game. I was very proud of the
effort they put forth the entire game. It was very cold that evening, but that didn’t
stop either team. The Ladycats combined for 12 hits and 15 walks. Lana Roy and Madi
Fields combined for 6 of the Ladycats hits. Destiny Waldron pitched five innings and
fought the freezing cold to get her first win on the mound. -Coach Shank

Win 20-4
Record: 1-0 (1-0)
It was nice to finally get outside and play a game after having our first 9 games canceled due to weather. It is also nice to start the season off with a win against a league opponent. I was pleased with our patience and discipline at the plate tonight, we were aggressive, but did not chase pitches out of the strike zone. Kassidy Abney led us offensively with 2 hits. Noelani Tangonan added a bases loaded triple and finished with 6 RBI, while Maddie Curless, Katy Henry, Hannah Mann, Shelbie Rose and Savannah Shank each had a hit. On the mound, Maddie pitched 5 solid innings to get the win. Defensively, we played error free ball, which was good see since our time being outside has been very limited. - Coach Grogg
