5/16/18 - Sectionals Baseball @ Kings vs. CNE
CHAMPIONS!
Won 7-4
Next game state tournament at Hamilton HS Friday 5 pm district finals vs. Carlisle
Record: 18-10 (10-2)
Brody gave us everything he had for 6.1 innings tonight. He was in total control early on then CNE really made him work the fifth and sixth. He threw a lot of stressful pitches but was proud of him for grinding through them. Justin Ballard nailed it home in the 7th. He attacked the strike zone and pitched with the lead.
Offensively we had great approaches at the plate. We made the pitcher be around the plate and did not chase. We had timely hitting with walks and took advantage of an error late. That was the difference. You could see the wind come right out of them.
Overall, a great win for this team. This puts them in really good company being only the fifth sectional champs team in school history. We have never had a district champ. We are going to give everything we got to make that happen Friday. -Coach Lawson
Dustin Howard 2-4, go ahead 2B in Bottom 6th
Brant Bandow 1-2, rbi
Chris Farrow 1-2, rbi

Won 10-0 (5 innings)
Next game state tournament at Kings HS vs CNE for sectional title
Record: 16-8 (10-2)
This was the most dominate I have seen Brody Rice all season. He was able to throw his offspeed for strikes which kept them off his fastball. A 1 hitter and 12 strikeouts in 5 innings is a great day at the park.
We were in it mentally every pitch tonight. The bottom did a great job of turning it over to the top. We took advantage of some walks early. It’s always nice to get that cushion for your pitcher and defense to play relaxed. - Coach Lawson

Record: 14-8 (10-2)
What a great come from behind win against a good team. They are 15-6 and won there league. We got done 6-1 giving them to many free bases. Walks and a couple errors. Once we cleaned it up we got our foot in the door and gave ourselves a chance. This team is real good when we don’t beat ourselves.
Justin Ballard was no doubt the player of the game. He made a diving catch in right and doubled the kid off second, pitched in relief and walked away with the win, and had a couple hits while driving in some runs. He was everywhere tonight.
We won on a past ball. It didn’t kick far from the catcher but with Preston’s speed he got a great jump and beat the pitcher to the plate. What a way to walk away with the win.
This was a great win for us tonight heading into next week. It should give us confidence and momentum heading into tournament play. -Coach Lawson

5/3/18 - Varsity Baseball @ East Clinton
SBAAC National Division CHAMPIONS!!!
Won 13-2 (6 innings)
Record: 13-8 (10-2)
We looked strong at the plate again. Barreling up the baseball and making productive outs is a great combination. We need a superb job of hitting the ball where it was pitched tonight. EC pitchers were living away all game.
Jacksson really buckled down on the mound. He didn’t try to do to much. He focused more on keeping the ball down and hitting spots. He became sharper as the game went on. He only had one inning more than 4 hitters came to the plate.
This makes two in a row and five out of our last six. This year it could not have happed to a better group of kids. They have devoted a ton of time into the game. Not just physically but mentally too. -Coach Lawson

Record: 12-8 (9-2)
Clinched at least share of league title. If we beat EC tomorrow we will be outright champs.
We were up 10-2 going into the 7th and had to burn through three pitchers to close it out. We couldn’t find the strike zone. That’s what teammates are for, to pick each other up. I’m really happy for the team. It was a big win tonight.
This is the day we’ve been looking for offensively. We were able to pound out 11 hits off a quality pitcher. We need to ride this momentum into tomorrow. If we keep putting the ball in play good things will happen. -Coach Lawson

5/2/18 - JV Baseball HOME vs. Williamsburg

What a game and yes, you're reading the score right. This was a wild one that our team was able to come out on top of. After surrendering 5 runs in the top of the 1st inning, we responded with 5 runs of our own. Williamsburg then scored 4 more in the 2nd. We were able to bring around 8 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning to hold a 13-9 advantage. Again, Williamsburg responded with 6 runs to retake the lead. In the bottom of the 3rd we were finally able to take the lead and total control of the game by scoring 14 runs. We were very disciplined at the plate and the balls that we did hit, we hit hard. Orin Potts and Dakota Ware both hit doubles, Kaleb Goodin hit a triple, and Hayden Tedrick hit an inside-the-park home run. Kaleb Goodin started the game pitching and Nate Moore did a good job pitching in relief, throwing 2 2/3 innings, striking out 6. There were quite a few fundamental mistakes that we made offensively and defensively. But this team doesn't ever quit and we were able to battle through the adversity to win the game. -Coach Freeman

We played much better than last week. We had a rough second inning but then went on to retire 15 straight batters. Brant did a real nice job on the mound getting strike one. He was hitting his spots well tonight and trusting his defense.
We looked much more comfortable at the plate. We had a discussion before the game about taking more confidence up there. Trusting your hands and not thinking, reacting. It seemed to work well for us. -Coach Lawson

Lost 2-1
Record: 10-7 (7-1)
A lead off error that led to a run and a few hustle plays was the difference in this one. Neither team hit. We put the ball in play but had to many fly balls. We cannot fly out 10 times and expect good things to happen. We need to hit the ball on the ground and make them field it and throw it.
It’s a shame we couldn’t get one for Brody. He pitched his tail off. Only throwing 63 pitches complete game and had 9 strikeouts. We need to get him more run support than a 1 run. -Coach Lawson

Won 2-1 in 10 innings
Record: 8-6 (7-0)
They scored first on a 5-4-3 double play in the 3rd
We responded the next half inning with a run. Cole Ficke lead off single, Dustin Howard attempted a sac but beat it out for a single, Brant Bandow sac bunted them. Jack Davidson generated the run with a sac fly to left.
Second run game in top of 10th. Just Ballard lead off single, stole second and brody hit a ground ball to third so he moved up on a 5-3. Good thing we started him in motion or it would have been a dp. Moved to third on a 3 unassisted by Cole Ficke. Scored on an e5 hit by Dustin Howard.
This was a well played game both ways. Honestly, it was probably the best hs game I’ve ever been apart of. Both pitchers were dealing, defenses were solid, and hitters were putting the ball in play. You could tell the team that was going to win tonight was the team that made the least amount of errors.
Hat off to Jacksson Waialae for another great performance on the mound. When it’s his day to pitch we expect to win. He got in a couple jams but made pitches when he had to. He was also the mvp of the game (2 time, last season as well). Congrats to him for that. Something to be very proud of.
Brody came in behind him in the 7th and gave us another 4 solid innings. He didn’t miss a beat from Jacksson. Looked just as sharp. This was a huge win for us from a team perspective. CNE is a very good team. It should give us confidence we need to play with anyone. I am very happy for the team and what they were able to accomplish tonight.

4/20/18 - JV Baseball HOME vs. CNE
Lost 12-11
This was a tough game to lose, but one that was very exciting to be a part of. After trailing 8-0 going into the 5th inning we were able to cut the lead to 8-5 by the top of the seventh inning. We had a lot of confidence and energy going into that inning that was missing early on in the game. Despite being down 3 runs it seemed everyone in the dugout believed we still had a good opportunity to win the game. Feeding off of this we were able to score 6 runs in the inning to take an 11-8 lead. I was incredibly proud of the heart and fight that the team showed to get to that point. Unfortunately, it did not end up being enough and CNE deserves credit for being able to respond in the way that they did and come back to win the game. Obviously it stings to lose a game like that after fighting so hard, but it says a lot about our group of guys to be able to even get back in the game. We will continue to try to fix some of the mistakes that we had that are within are control and keep getting better as we enter the last couple weeks of the season.

We jumped out to a 4-1 lead and then got to comfortable. Missed out on some 2 out opportunities with runners in scoring position, and had a couple errors and mental errors in the field that led to runs. We played well enough to win but didn’t make the plays when we had to. -Coach Lawson

Won 18-8 (6 innings)
Record: 7-4 (6-0)
Mason had a good outing on the mound. He was really able to locate his curveball which kept them off his fastball. Dustin Howard came in behind him and did what relievers are suppose to do. Throw strikes.
Another nice team win. We hit the baseball up and down the entire line up. We jump led out on top and every time Georgetown chipped into the lead we would respond. Very proud of how the guys played. -Coach Lawson

We came in and took care of business today. The bats were hot and got a quality start out of Eric Patton. The wind was gusting today. Justin Ballard made two beautiful catches going back on the ball. We need to enjoy this one tonight and be ready to hit the diamond again tomorrow. With all the rain early this season we gave 8 games in 8 days.

Down 5-1 after the first half of the fourth I was a little nervous. The way things were going I wasn’t sure if we were going to be able to mustard up 5 runs. Sure enough with this team that does not quit responded immediately in the bottom half tying it up. This was a great come behind win for us. It should give us the confidence the game is never over and anything can happen.
Brody had another strong outing. He left a few balls up but pounded the zone low and let his defense play. He walked the leadoff in the seventh so we went to Jacksson. Always a tough situation to be put in with a runner on and no outs. He slam the door for us though. Not to many saves in high school. That was a good one. -Coach Lawson

We put together another good performance last night. Defensively, we only had one error and starting pitcher Orin Potts pitched all 5 innings, with 11 K, and 0 R. We were able to jump out to a 5 run lead in the top of the first. Orin did a good job to pitch with the lead and attack hitters throwing a lot of strikes. Offensively, we were patient at the plate and were able to get some good pitches to hit. We put together 9 hits to score 14 runs. It was great for our guys to get a league win and continue the success that we have had over the past couple of games. -Coach Freeman

Just a sloppy game for us defensively. We had 5 errors and 7 walks. We cannot give a team that many free bases and expect to win. I give Wilmington a lot of credit. They played well. A very clean game and hit the baseball forcing us to make plays.
What is nice we play tomorrow. No time to dwell on this one. Got to move on and be ready tomorrow. Big league game. -Coach Lawson

We played almost error free baseball again tonight and had a strong performance from starting pitcher Trenton Czaika that led us to pick up a win. We did a good job to make the routine plays and not let errors compound on us. The few errors that we did have, we were able to quickly move on to the next pitch and make a play to keep it from hurting us. Offensively, we had a couple of big two out hits to score runs in both the 2nd and 3rd innings. The bottom of our order really carried us tonight with timely base hits and putting the ball in play to make productive outs. We have to continue the momentum gained from our last two games into a league game against Williamsburg. -Coach Freeman

Jacksson looked very strong in his first outing of the year. He has been dealing with some back tightness so this is the first time we ran him out there for a start. It makes such a huge difference when he is in the lineup. He did fall behind some hitters but he found way to make pitches to get himself out of his own jams. You could tell he was struggling a bit finding his release point. I have total confidence in him that will be fixed in another start or two.
Defense played very solid and made every play behind Jacksson. He was pitching with runners on base so any error could have been costly. Hopefully we can roll that type of play into next week.
We had a lot of guys with one hit today. What was nice is they came in bunches. Makes it easier to score that way. We also had a couple sac bunts to move runners over for the next guy. Both times we were able to cash those in. -Coach Lawson

4/6/18 - JV Baseball HOME vs. Bethel Tate
Lost 12-8
Next game Saturday 4/7 Home vs. CNE
We lost a hard fought game tonight. We continued to battle the entire game and stayed within striking distance, but in the end we just had too many errors to be successful. Probably the most damaging part of our errors tonight was the fact that they occurred in succession. Multiple times throughout the game we had back-to-back plays that resulted in fielding errors. Mistakes and errors are a part of the game, we expect them to happen, but for us moving forward we have really got to focus on making the routine plays.
Bethel-Tate jumped out early with 4 runs in the top of the 1st, but by the end of the 5th inning we only trailed by one run 7-6. Despite some of the struggles we continued to tell our guys we were right there and they did a good job to respond. Orin Potts started the game on the mound. Even though he didn't feel like he had his best stuff, he gave us everything he had and kept us in the game through 4 innings. Jesse Wright pitched well in relief. Offensively, we continued putting balls in play much like we did Thursday. When we put balls in play good things are going to happen, so we need to continue this going forward. If we can do that and clean up some of the mistakes it is going to lead to more positive results.

What a gutsy performance by freshman Brody Rice. He struggled a bit in the third and fourth then really found it late, and continued to get stronger. He was pin point the last couple innings which is what really led the charge and allow him to go the distance.
Offensively we had one bad inning. We had bases loaded no outs in the second and had 3 straight k’s. Other than that we put the ball in play hard and good things happened.
Three of there runs came off of turning double plays and throwing the ball away. We need to do a better job of taking care of the baseball. Those two throwing errors almost cost us. -Coach Lawson

It was nice to be able to get outside and get some game action. It has been over a week since we have been able to play a game. Due to the long layoff the coaching staff was concerned that we may start a little flat. However, we scored a run in the top of the first inning after just two hitters coming to the plate. We had multiple balls that were hit hard throughout the game, but they were right at someone. We also had quite a few base runners, but some key mistakes cost us multiple scoring opportunities which really made the difference in the game. Trenton Czaika started pitching, throwing 2 2/3 innings with 4 strikeouts. Unfortunately, he got behind in a lot of counts which limited his ability to go further into the game. Kaleb Goodin pitched 3 1/3 innings in relief with 3 strikeouts.

To many free passes and extended innings defensively early on. Anytime you give a team more than three outs to work with it will haunt you. We had a couple of miscommunications on fly balls and kicked around plays in the infield that all ended up being costly. Right now we need to improve at making the routine plays behind our pitchers. We are making them work entirely to hard.
I am proud of our guys for not rolling over and quitting. They were up as many as 13-4 after the third. It would have been easy for them to quit. We battled all the way back and even got the tying run on in the seventh to make things interesting. We need to roll over our last few innings of play into Monday when it really begins to count against CNE.
