CONGRATULATIONS Savannah Rhodes, STATE qualifier.
10/25 Cross Country
Congratulations Savannah, STATE QUALIFIER!
Competing in the Division II Region 8 meet at Troy, Rhodes clocked a career best 19:55.88 and finished 15th in the race to extend her season one more week. The top 16 finishers and the runners on the top four teams advance to the state meet.
“People were telling me I could make it this far,” Rhodes said after the race while standing on the levee at the Great Miami River. “I knew I would try my hardest but I didn’t think I would make it to state.”
Just in her first year of varsity cross country, Rhodes ran a race well beyond her years. She was in the lead pack the entire race until the final mile or so.
“I was nervous,” said BHS coach Tony Blevins. “I thought she might have went out too hard.”
Around the two mile mark, Rhodes realized she was still in with the leaders. And while she won more than her share of meets this season, this was the regional meet and a state berth was on the line so this easily was her toughest competition.
“I got scared and excited,” said Rhodes, who also is a competitive dancer. “I sprinted sooner than I usually do. I wore myself out.”
And even though a pair of runners passed her down the stretch, even a struggling Rhodes found something inside to pass one of them and retain a place in the top 16.
“It looked like she was fading,” Blevins said of his freshman runner. “But she wants to be good. It’s something internal. She doesn’t just want to be good on race day. She wants to be good every day.”
