Wildcats take 4th of 23 teams at Madiera Invitational / Denier CHAMPION
Overall it was a good weekend for us. We started the day off Saturday in first place and fell to third and stayed there until the final round was over. We eventually dropped to fifth place .5 points behind Bethel Tate and 7 points behind Reading. Although some of our young guys did not have the success they would have liked they are getting better and getting some much needed match experience. Andrew Frump at 152 won two matches and ended up 2-2 for the tournament and Cade Huston (285) returned to action from a knee injury during football season. Although Cade did not place he did win a match and lost to the eventually champion from Point Pleasant (WV). It was good to see Cade get to knock some of the rust off but we have a lot of work to do to get him in the shape he needs to be in to be successful. Kyle Denier was our only tournament champion winning four matches and beating the number 1 seed Caleb Lane (WV state qualifier) from Point Pleasant (WV) 9-4. In the finals he wrestled Dustin Robbins from Reading beating him 4-3. Johnny Schirmer wrestled extremely well this weekend; he listened and was very focused. Johnny Placed 2nd at 126 and upset Jaden Anderson the 1 seed from Indian Hill 6-3 in the semi-finals. He lost in the finals to Jackson Hugentobler 15-13 the 2 seed from Madeira. Johnny scored a reversal and 3 near fall in the last 30 seconds to tie the score before giving up a reversal. Johnny hit a reversal that would have tied the match back up but time expired before he could gain control. Brent Hopkins placed 2nd at 132 going 3-1 for the tournament with 2 pins before losing to Casey Ragle (a state qualifier) from Norwood in the finals. Clayton Schirmer placed 2nd at 138 going 2-1 for the tournament beating Issia Johnson the 1 seed from Reading 13-4 in the semi-finals. Clayton come up short in the finals losing a close match 3-1 to Matt Hall from Bethel Tate. Steven Latchford placed 5th at 182 going 3-2 for the tournament with 3 pins and his only losses to the 3rd place finisher Leonrde Dean from Withrow and 4th place finisher John Williams from Indian Hill. James Peters placed 6th at 195 in a weight class that not only featured older more experienced wrestlers but 2 Division II state qualifiers. James went 3-3 posting 3 pins and lost a close match 6-2 to the eventual 3rd place finisher Donzell Tuggle from Withrow. -Coach Nicely
