A seemingly uninspired Blanchester wrestling team was defeated by Bethel-Tate 42-36 Wednesday in the Div. III Region 15 semifinal round of the OHSAA State Duals Team Tournament at the BHS gym. “We just came out flat,” said BHS coach Scott Nicely.
The loss ended Blanchester’s 2-year run of advancing to the Final 8 in the state dual team tournament.
Blanchester fell behind 24-9 through 138 pounds but then mounted a comeback. Hunter Collier began with a pin at 145 then Justin Shoemaker notched a pin at 152 to get BHS within 24-21.
When Dan Peters decisioned B.J. Ratcliff 9-2 at 160, the Wildcats pulled even at 24-24. “Dan wrestled a great match,” Nicely said.
Conan Nicely recorded a first period pin at 170 and Blanchester led 30-24. Despite a forfeit at 182 that tied things at 30-30, the BHS coach was confident his squad could come out on top.
Jed Turpin’s win at 220 was the only BHS victory among the final 3 matches as the Tigers prevailed.
“They went out there with the attitude, and it’s not intentional but when you get on a roll like we’ve had the last 3 or 4 years — we’ve had some success — kids get it in their heads that they’re unbeatable,” said Nicely. “It just doesn't happen that way.”
“Bethel is going to be in the (Southern Buckeye Conference) league tournament, Western Brown’s going to be there,” he said. “The league’s going to be tough. Hopefully this woke us up. Hopefully this opened our eyes.”
