2/28 Wildcat Wrestlers WIN the Sectional CHAMPIONSHIP AGAIN!
Wrestling’s postseason is here and Blanchester is rolling on all cylinders.
The host Wildcats won their second straight sectional title Saturday afternoon at BHS, sending 11 of 13 wrestlers on to the districts.
The other two Wildcat wrestlers finished fifth and will be first alternates for next weekend’s district wrestling meet at Hobart Arena in Troy.
Blanchester head coach Scott Nicely couldn’t have been more proud of his team.
“I am ecstatic,” said Nicely. “We had kids step up. Our kids wrestled with a lot of heart. I think they felt they had something to prove. I was very proud of them.”
Blanchester had seven wrestlers competing in championship bouts. Kyle Denier started the Wildcats off with a 13-4 win in the 113 pound final against Kendal Johnson of Williamsburg.
Timmy McIntyre picked up the second Wildcat sectional title, edging Clermont Northeastern’s Seth Chambers 2-1 in the final at 126. Devin Wells was impressive, picking up two quick pins followed by an 11-7 victory over Tyler Goodpaster of Deer Park to take the title at 138.
Conan Nicely picked up the fourth and final sectional title for BHS. After being seeded below Williamsburg’s Dawson Davis last weekend at the Southern Buckeye Conference meet, Nicely handed Davis his second straight finals loss, beating him 10-2. It was just Davis’ second and third losses of the year.
Trey Lynch (120), Justin Shoemaker (152) and Joe Holcomb (285) each finished as runner-up in their respective weight classes.
Also placing in the top four for Blanchester was Hunter Collier at 145 (fourth), Gage Egner at 160 (fourth), Robert Huston at 182 (third) and Cade Huston at 195 (third). Egner entered the Blanchester lineup this week and was impressive, while both Hustons lost on Friday night only to wrestle back for third place.
Tristan Greene (132) and Jed Turpin (220) are Blanchester’s two alternates. Turpin may end up in the district draw, because the Milton-Union sectional is only sending three wrestlers at 220. So an alternate will be selected from one of the other three sectionals.

Blanchester, ranked second in the Cincinnati-area coaches poll in Divisions II and III, met no resistance against North College Hill, winning 59-9.
Facing the third ranked team in the same poll proved to be more of a challenge. In the end, Blanchester defeated Bethel-Tate 41-27 to improve its dual record to 16-4 on the season.
“Anytime you can get 2 wins against teams like that, it makes you feel good,” said Nicely. “We had a pretty tough week up at Mechanicsburg, and we’re trying to get healed up and get guys healthy.” “I thought we wrestled pretty well,” Nicely said. “Bethel’s a very good squad. They keep working at it and getting better and better.”
Nicely mentioned a couple of key victories in the dual that helped propel the Wildcats to victory.
“Nathan Wilson at 220 was a big one for us,” said Nicely. “Any time you get points out of a kid like that in his first year of wrestling, it makes it big. Conan (Nicely’s) match – he had a tough kid. That one could have went either way.
“Having our lineup jacked around a little bit and having McIntyre up at 132 … the kid (he wrestled) was a pretty stout kid. When you’re giving up 7 or 8 pounds, and you can get a win, that was big for us.”

Blanchester wrestling coach Scott Nicely has been around long enough to know that picking up a couple of wins in December is always a good thing.
Blanchester ripped through Amelia (55-24) and Withrow (66-12) Wednesday night at AHS.
“I am proud of the way we wrestled but have a long way to go if we are going to accomplish the goals we have set,” said Nicely.
The BHS coach was pleased with “the younger guys in the lineup (who) stepped up and scored points when we needed them to.”
